You’re My Cup of Tea: Hosting a Charming Garden Tea Party

How I created a feminine garden tea party filled with thrifted treasures, Trader Joe’s blooms, meaningful details, and sweet time around the table.

The “why” behind this gathering. Tea time with my girl many years ago. 💗

Some of my sweetest memories have been gathered around a table sharing tea — whether with my mom and sister, dear friends, or now my daughter, Mackenzie.

For years, it became a holiday tradition for a girlfriend and me to take our moms to tea. Truthfully, it was never really about the finger sandwiches or fancy teacups. It was about slowing down together…usually with a gorgeous ocean view and lots of laughter.

So recently, as spring turned toward summer, I decided to recreate that feeling with a feminine garden tea party of my own.

Third thrift store trip was the charm! Hunting for mismatched teacups became part of the fun.

Only one teeny tiny problem. Someone who shall remain nameless (my husband) donated my collection of teacups.

So, the first order of business was heading to thrift stores to hunt for enough teacups for the gathering. Yes, I still had my white Wedgewood Strawberry & Vine china, but I envisioned a table filled with mismatched teacups that felt charming, collected, and whimsical.

Third time was the charm because I finally found enough teacups for everyone. Phew!

Pink, feminine, playful, and just a little whimsical…exactly the feeling I hoped to create.

I wanted the table to feel pink, feminine, playful, and elevated all at once (I know…that’s asking a lot of a dining table! lol). But surprisingly, having that vision in mind made pulling everything together much easier.

Here’s how it all came together:

A full view of the garden tea table layered with vintage finds, soft florals, and meaningful little details.

Setting the Table

Soft Layers & Linens

Since I wanted the teacups and teapots to really shine, I kept the linens soft and simple as a beautiful backdrop.

  • White coverlets used as tablecloths — my mom purchased these years ago in Turkey, and I use them constantly. I love the weight and texture they bring to a table.
  • Pink linen napkins — similar to these
Mixing teapots, teacups, flowers, candlelight, and collected pieces made the table feel charming and welcoming.
Feminine Tabletop Details

The tableware ended up being one of my favorite parts because each piece added a little personality and charm.

  • Pink chargers — after three tries, these were the clear winner! I can already tell they’ll be incredibly versatile. (I’m sure they’ll make another appearance on my Valentine’s Day table.)
  • White Wedgewood Strawberry & Vine plates — from my wedding registry 33 years ago!
  • Pink drinking glasses — these added such a pretty vintage feel to the table and caught the light beautifully during lunch.
  • Bone china teacups — a lovely mix of thrifted finds. One of the cups was actually marked “Made in Occupied Japan,” which turned into a fun little history lesson around the table.
  • Sterling Reed & Barton Francis 1st flatware — another wedding registry treasure.

Quick PSA: Pull out your beautiful registry pieces and ENJOY them! They deserve more than sitting in cabinets for special occasions.

A teacup, good friends and a half glass of champagne…my kind of afternoon. 😉

 The Pretty Little Extras

These extra touches helped bring the entire table to life:

  • Crystal candlesticks — another wedding gift that still feels timeless, similar to these
  • Pink spiral taper candles — I loved the added layer of softness and whimsy they brought
  • Silver salt and pepper shakers — also wedding gifts

Clearly, younger me knew what she was doing when creating that registry. Well, with a lot of guidance from Gigi and some very generous Aunties! 😉

Teapots turned flower vases may be my new favorite entertaining detail.

Flowers for a Garden Tea

A trip to my tried-and-true Trader Joe’s provided the flowers for all the arrangements. Since it was right before Mother’s Day, the selection was amazing…along with the crowd of people grabbing flowers first thing in the morning!

If you love creating affordable floral arrangements, you can also read my post on how I choose Trader Joe’s flowers and turn them into beautiful bouquets here.

Tiny teacup arrangements added the sweetest touch of whimsy on the buffet (and one in the powder room for FUN!)

For the arrangements I used:

  • Garden roses (an absolute must for a garden tea)
  • Carnations
  • Calla lilies
  • Eucalyptus
  • Delphinium
  • Hypericum
  • Filler flowers
  • Baby’s breath — which I normally skip, but it came with the roses and actually added such a sweet softness to the arrangements

The fun part was using teapots and teacups as vases for the floral arrangements. It felt equal parts elegant and whimsical. I also scattered several small bud vases down the table to make everything feel layered and collected.

A tiny favor for guests: “You’re my cup of tea.” 💗

A Sweet Little Favor for Guests

At each place setting, guests found a teapot-shaped tea bag holder topped with a tea bag and a personalized tag that read:

“You’re my cup of tea! 💗 Shelley”

I tied each one with pink organza ribbon, and honestly, those tiny thoughtful touches ended up making the favors feel extra special. They also added another pretty detail to the table itself.

The tea station included everything guests needed to mix their perfect cup.

Creating a Charming Tea Buffet

While I wanted our dining table to feel beautiful outside, I also wanted the tea service and buffet area to feel warm, welcoming, and visually interesting.

To create more dimension, I used varying heights and layered pieces throughout the setup.

Tea Station

To elevate the tea station, I brought out several silver serving pieces and created a self-serve tea area complete with:

  • Four varieties of tea
  • Cream
  • Sugar
  • Sugar substitutes
  • Honey spoons

I also served two varieties of iced tea in glass bottles and added themed labels tied with pink ribbon for another personalized touch.

Personalized tea labels tied with pink ribbon added one more thoughtful little detail.
Tea-Time Treats

Okay…so technically I cheated and did not serve a “traditional” tea menu.

But I also didn’t want anyone leaving hungry. (That instinct is deeply inherited from my mama. 😊)

Guests nibbled throughout the afternoon on tiered trays filled with:

  • Homemade heart-shaped scones
  • Lemon cake made with Trader Joe’s Meyer Lemon Cake Mix
  • Walkers shortbread cookies

Because honestly…why make shortbread from scratch when these are already so delicious?

Butter and raspberry jam were served alongside everything, and pink scalloped napkins leftover from my Launch Party tied in perfectly with the feminine garden theme.

Every good gathering needs a friend who brings the bubbly. 🥂
A Little Bubbly

No celebration feels complete without a little sparkle.

A silver ice bucket filled with chilled champagne greeted guests as they arrived, while wine, sparkling water, sodas, and other beverages were also available throughout the afternoon.

Layering florals, serving pieces, and varying heights helped the buffet feel just as charming as the dining table.

Layering the Buffet Table

The buffet table was draped with the same white coverlets used on the dining table to keep everything cohesive. I even hid cardboard boxes underneath to create varying heights for serving pieces and decor.

I let the food and drinks remain the stars of the show while adding just enough decor to zhush things up a bit.

Decor included:

(I found most of my bud vases years ago in Target dollar bins, but there are so many cute options available now like these.)

One of my favorite moments of any gathering…everyone helping themselves and settling in comfortably.

A Simple Lunch Menu

One thing I wholeheartedly believe? You do not have to do it all yourself.

I happily accepted guests’ offers to bring wine, champagne, salads, and desserts. Not only did it lighten the workload, but it also made everyone feel part of the gathering.

Main Menu

  • Chicken salad croissants — a new recipe that ended up being a huge hit
  • Fruit salad
  • Spinach and strawberry salad with pecans

Desserts

  • Chantilly cake
  • Mini Nothing Bundt Cakes in assorted flavors
And yes…there may have been a little “spilling the tea” happening in the kitchen too. 😉

More than anything, this gathering was such a sweet reminder that hospitality doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful.

The mismatched teacups, Trader Joe’s flowers, homemade touches, and lingering conversations around the table ended up being the things everyone remembered most.

There’s just something special about slowing down, pouring another cup of tea, and making space for connection — especially in a season where life feels so busy!

And yes…we definitely spilled a little tea too. 😉☕ (Sorry, I had to go there.)

A beautiful afternoon spent celebrating friendship, motherhood, and meaningful time together. 💗
