I recently hosted my Christian Book Club of about 30 women. We’d read a touching, faith-inspiring true story, Waiting for a Miracle: One Woman’s Journey to Unshakable Faith by Cyndi Peterson. Even more exciting, Dr. Peterson herself had graciously agreed to join us for an evening of discussion and fellowship.
Our Christian Book Club gatherings typically include appetizers, desserts, and drinks. But since Cyndi was making a herculean effort to drive to my home, I wanted to host a quick and casual dinner for her before the rest of the guests arrived.
It was the perfect opportunity to demonstrate something I firmly believe: entertaining doesn’t have to be complicated to be beautiful.
With a little planning ahead and a simple menu, you can pull together an easy summer tablescape that feels welcoming, thoughtful, and special—even on a workday.
One of the reasons this table came together so quickly is because I’ve spent years building what I call my “Entertaining Arsenal”—a collection of versatile entertaining pieces that work for multiple occasions throughout the year.

Blue & White Gingham: A Summer Classic
There’s something timeless about blue and white gingham. It’s crisp, cheerful, and practically screams summer entertaining.
For this table, I kept the palette simple and fresh, layering classic pieces I already owned with a few colorful accents
Linens
Blue & White Gingham Tablecloth
This classic checked tablecloth instantly sets the tone for casual summer entertaining. I own similar versions in red and black gingham as well, which makes them incredibly versatile throughout the year.
The yellow napkins add a fun pop of color and keep the table feeling light and sunny. I shopped my own Entertaining Arsenal for these, but a simple cotton-linen blend would work beautifully too.
Building the Table: Layers That Do the Heavy Lifting
One of my favorite entertaining shortcuts is starting with classic foundational pieces that can work for almost any occasion.
Tableware
I used my beloved Wedgwood Strawberry & Vine plates. If you’re building your own Entertaining Arsenal, white plates are always a smart investment because they pair with virtually everything.
In fact, if you’re just starting to collect entertaining pieces, be sure to check out my post on How to Build Your Own Entertaining Arsenal where I share the versatile pieces I reach for again and again when setting tables and hosting gatherings.
These hand-wash-only beauties are absolutely worth the extra effort. Their delicate design adds just enough interest without competing with the flowers.
Texture is often what makes a table feel finished. The woven placemats provide warmth and contrast against the blue-and-white tablecloth.
Everyday Flatware
No need to overthink it. Your everyday pieces work perfectly when the rest of the table is doing the talking.
Trader Joe’s Flowers to the Rescue (Again)
If you’ve spent any time here, you know Trader Joe’s flowers are one of my favorite entertaining secrets.
I wanted the arrangements to feel as though I’d wandered through a field and gathered whatever was blooming. To create that loose, collected look, I used:
- Green Dragon/Aster
- Gerber Daisies
- Ornamental St. John’s Wort
- Jumbo Mum Balls
- Stock
- Eucalyptus
I arranged everything in a white ceramic pitcher (similar to this one) to anchor the center of the table and added smaller arrangements in bud vases throughout the room.
One of my favorite tricks is mixing vase styles rather than using matching vessels everywhere. The collected look feels more relaxed, interesting, and personal. My Favorite Hosting Trick: Do It the Night Before
Want to know one of the easiest ways to reduce entertaining stress?
Arrange your flowers the night before.
That’s exactly what I did here.
By getting the flowers done ahead of time, I removed one more task from game day and could focus on enjoying our guests instead of rushing around at the last minute.
Small steps like this make hosting feel far less overwhelming.
Fun-Size Hosting Tip 💡
Choose one thing to make special and keep everything else simple.
For this dinner, it was the flowers and the table.
The menu stayed easy, guests contributed dishes, and I did as much prep work as possible the night before.
Small Details That Keep the Hostess at the Table
I always try to think about the little things guests might need before they need them.
A few practical additions included:
- Salt and pepper shakers
- Glass water bottles
- Steak knives – added but not pictured
These simple touches help keep me seated with my guests instead of making constant trips back to the kitchen.
A Simple Summer Dinner That Practically Makes Itself
The menu was intentionally easy. Since this was happening on a workday before book club, I wanted delicious without complicated.
Even better, two other couples joined us and each brought a dish—which is proof that you don’t have to do everything yourself.
Start with Something Easy
A simple Trader Joe’s charcuterie board gave everyone something to nibble on while we fired up the BBQ.
The Main Event
Tri-Tip – My make-ahead marinade is always a crowd-pleaser and perfect for summer entertaining.
(Be sure to grab Uncle Gene’s famous recipe!)
Salad – Brought by a guest.
Roasted Carrots – Also brought by a guest.
Garlic Bread – Because carbs make everything better.
I skipped dessert since we’d be enjoying plenty of treats during book club later that evening.
Proof You Don’t Have to Do It All
Can we normalize this?
Guests can contribute.
The world won’t stop spinning if you don’t make every single dish yourself.
In fact, allowing friends to bring something often makes gatherings feel more collaborative and relaxed. And if you’re hosting on a weeknight, every little bit helps.
Why This Tablescape Earned a Spot in My Entertaining Arsenal
What I love most about this table is its versatility.
Swap in red napkins and patriotic flowers and suddenly you’re ready for the Fourth of July.
Change the florals and add a few pumpkins and it transitions beautifully into early fall.
That’s exactly the kind of piece I look for when building my Entertaining Arsenal—classic, flexible, and easy to reinvent.
Because if a tablecloth can work this hard, why shouldn’t it? 😉
This dinner went off without a hitch and gave us the opportunity to spend meaningful time with Cyndi before the rest of our guests arrived. The evening was relaxed, welcoming, and proof that entertaining doesn’t have to be elaborate to feel special.
Sometimes all you need is a simple table, fresh flowers, good food, and people you’re excited to gather around it. 💙🤍🌼
