Create a Fiesta with Flair!

Nothing screams fun like a fiesta-themed party. Between the bright décor, festive music, and delicious Mexican fare…what’s not to love? Honestly, the guacamole alone is enough to count me in!

Living in Southern California, I’ve used this fiesta party theme for everything from work events to school gatherings, birthdays, and of course—Cinco de Mayo celebrations.

Over the years, I’ve built a go-to stash of fiesta party décor that’s boxed, labeled, and ready to go—making hosting so much easier when an occasion pops up. A few staples I always have on hand:

For this celebration, my dad was turning 85 and requested something “small and simple.” (Does he know his daughter?!) I honored his wishes by keeping things intimate, scaling back the décor, and adding just enough thoughtful touches to make it feel special—because 85 is a big deal.

A fun and easy start to this fiesta birthday celebration—simple digital invites set the tone for a relaxed, colorful gathering.

Invites:

With such a small guest list, I could’ve just called everyone. But instead, I tried a digital text invitation. It was easy to edit, simple to send, and a fun, modern option if you’re looking for easy party planning ideas.

Decor:

After pulling out my “fiesta” box, I took a look at what I already had and challenged myself to use it in a fresh way. Reuse, refresh, repurpose—always my goal when it comes to affordable party décor.

I incorporated pieces from past parties like lanterns, votive candles, and a few handmade items. Then I added a couple of new touches for extra flair:

For each place setting, I created simple napkin rings using ribbon and a pom pom for a little pop of color. Per my dad’s request, I kept things easy with paper plates and napkins—but still made it feel festive and pulled together.

Fiesta party décor for the win—bright colors, simple layers, and just enough festive touches to make the buffet feel special and inviting.
A simple fiesta-inspired place setting with a pop of color—easy details like ribbon napkin rings add just the right festive touch.
An outdoor fiesta birthday table ready for celebration—colorful, casual, and perfect for an intimate gathering under the Southern California sky.

Flowers:

For florals, I headed to my go-to, Trader Joe’s, to see what they had in stock. Grocery store flowers are one of my favorite easy entertaining tips, and they’re perfect for creating colorful fiesta centerpieces.

I stuck with bright, cheerful blooms like Gerber daisies and mums, adding St. John’s wort and Veronica for texture.

I like to spread flowers throughout the space, not just on the dining table. A few favorite spots:

  • Dining table centerpiece
  • Food serving area
  • Powder room (an often-overlooked detail!)

If there’s room, I’ll add a votive candle or themed hand towel too. It’s those little touches that really elevate your party décor.

Even the powder room gets a little fiesta love.

A meaningful focal point for this 85th birthday celebration—my dad’s artwork and the “85 Years Loved” sign made the perfect personal touch.

Special/Personal Touches:

This is always my favorite part—making the celebration feel personal.

My dad attended Art Center College of Design, so I pulled out one of his framed pieces and displayed it above the fireplace as a focal point. I also added a few older photos to the mantel and incorporated garland and the birthday sign.

To make guests feel included, I selected photos of my dad with each attendee, printed them, and placed them in small frames around the tablescape. Simple, meaningful, and such a great conversation starter.

Music:

While mariachi music would have fit the theme, we made the playlist all about my dad. Think:

  • Neil Diamond
  • Carole King
  • Jim Croce

It gave the whole evening a more personal, nostalgic feel—one of my favorite hosting tips for any birthday party.

A fun themed pre-party text sent to guests—an easy way to set the tone and build excitement for this fiesta birthday celebration.

“Themed” Pre-Game Text:

Since we were dining al fresco, I sent a fun text earlier in the day to let guests know to bring layers (coastal evenings can cool down!). It’s a small detail, but thoughtful touches like this really enhance the overall guest experience.

Instead of just sending a basic “boring” text, I instead used this fantastic E-greetings App called Poppynotes.  You choose the theme, type in the text and push send.  It’s that easy and look how adorable it turned out!

LOVED keeping with the theme and getting the guests excited about what was to come.

Beverage:

When it comes to drinks, I like to offer a variety—especially since my dad doesn’t drink. For this gathering, we had:

  • Sun tea, lemonade, and water
  • Sodas and flavored seltzers
  • Margaritas and beer for those who wanted them

Simple, easy, and something for everyone—especially helpful when planning a casual fiesta party menu.

Plus…Mexican food and a yummy marg (another fav) just really go hand in hand, am I right!?

A simple fiesta drink station with something for everyone—margaritas, mocktails, and chilled favorites ready for a casual celebration.
A festive outdoor fiesta buffet filled with Mexican favorites—easy entertaining with a local restaurant helping make it stress-free and delicious.

Food:

The best part of any fiesta! If you don’t feel like cooking, I highly recommend ordering from a favorite local Mexican restaurant—easy, delicious, and a great way to simplify party hosting.

We kept things classic:

  • Chips, salsa, and guacamole to start
  • Enchiladas, tacos, rice, and beans for dinner
  • My Mexican Caesar salad as a fresh addition

I also made simple food labels so guests knew what everything was, and dressed up the catering trays with colorful fabric to make the buffet feel a little more festive.

The guest of honor at his fiesta birthday celebration—surrounded by family, food, and all the little details made just for him.

A beautiful homemade birthday cake made with love—sweet, simple, and the perfect centerpiece for this 85th fiesta celebration.

Dessert:

Dessert was extra special. My daughter made the birthday cake (and she is an amazing baker!), which made it even more meaningful.

I also surprised my dad with his favorite—homemade vanilla ice cream. It’s a family tradition we’ve made for years, and it was the perfect nostalgic touch to end the night.

Favors:

I love sending guests home with a little something. For this party, I made homemade chocolate chip cookies—another one of my dad’s favorites.

I packaged them up with:

Displayed in a simple basket, they made for an easy and festive grab-and-go moment as guests headed out.

The party was a huge success—mostly because my dad was surrounded by people he loves. But those little details helped make it feel truly special.

I had so much fun reimagining my existing décor and giving it new life with just a few added touches. It really was a Fabulous Fun-Size Fiesta—and a perfect example of how simple fiesta party ideas can still feel meaningful and memorable.
