Happy New Year! Nothing screams FUN like the countdown of the ball drop in Times Square. Well, that is if I’m able to stay awake til then. LOL Often my hubbie and I countdown “California Style”, celebrating the New Year on New York time while it’s only 9 O’clock in California.
Having said that, an opportunity to throw a soiree? I’m in! In thinking of what decor I wanted to do, I thought of my time as an exchange student in Brazil many years ago. In Brazil, they have the tradition of wearing white on New Year’s Eve. This custom is from the Afro-Brazilian religions where white signifies purity, peace and spiritual cleaning. For them, wearing white is a way to welcome a fresh start and positive energy to the New Year.
With this in mind, I decided to mix the tradition of wearing white along with some Fun-Size “bling”…mixing in silver and gold to bring the festive and, of course, the FUN! Here’s how I achieved the look:
*As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases at zero additional cost to you.
Room Decor:
- On the wall, I added some Happy New Year’s signage found at Target in the dollar bins
*I tend to purchase things (like for New Year’s or Graduation) that don’t have the year
on them so I can reuse them multiple times. But there’s always some great inexpensive
buys at Target and Dollar Tree that are perfect for one-off occasions.
2. On the ceiling I added:
- White Paper Lanterns
- Silver Garland in varying lengths. (I also found this silver star garland that is darling, too.)
- Disco Balls in various sizes: 12”, 8”, 6” & 4” – Definitely bringing the BLING!
Table Decor:
For my table, I went for multiple layers using white, cream, silver and a touch of gold here and there. I tried to pull as much as I could from what I already had in my inventory to keep it budget-friendly.
- White table linen to the floor anchored the table.
- Down the center of the table:
- I put my mirrored placemats one after the other to use as a table runner. (I LOVE how the mirrors had the light of the candles and disco balls play off of them creating a magical sparkly feel to the room.)
- Crystal candlesticks with white tapered candles.
- Pillar Candles in cream color and varying heights on clear glass holders
- Votive Candles scattered throughout (I LOVE candlelight…so beautiful…and offers the bonus gift of filter 😉
- Floral arrangements of white hydrangeas, mums, St. John’s wort, blush roses, eucalyptus and ornamental cabbage were set in these fun mirrored vases. I also added Disco Ball Cocktail Stirrers to each arrangement for some extra sparkle.

Hot tip: I received these mirror placements as a wedding gift many years ago and they are pricey. They do have mirrored runners that are less expensive that look beautiful and would definitely work. I like the placemats as you have more flexibility in how you can use them, but do what works best for your wallet.
3. Place Settings:
- Silver Chargers (they also have them at Dollar Tree)
- White Dishes (I used my Wedgwood Strawberry & Vine)
- Silverware – I pulled out the good stuff, sterling Francis 1st by Reed & Barton
- Champagne Flutes – because…it’s New Year’s!
- Disco Ball Glassware with Straw – I originally found in Targets Dollar Bins & love how they brought playfulness to the table.
- Linen Napkins in cream
- Beaded necklaces with plastic champagne glasses – I also found these in the Target Dollar Bins. Just something silly and FUN fits the bill here, like these.
Favors:
I also like to give a little “swag” to my guests, so for each place setting a little goodie bag awaited them. Inside was a nice Silver Pen along with a Happy New Year Notecard to write their favorite memory, funniest memory & their “Word” for the coming year. It’s also a great conversation starter for the table. I think they came out so festive and dare I say it?…FUN!

To wrap up each favor, I kept it simple and just used:
- Cellophane Gift Bags (I always have these on hand)
- Silver Filler
- Gold Fabric Ribbon – ¼” thick
