A Gentle Pause for Advent

The Advent season has arrived, and with it comes the hustle and bustle we’ve all come to accept as part of Christmas. As our to-do lists grow and calendars fill up, it’s easy to forget what this time of year is truly about: preparing our hearts for the birth of Christ.

Put simply, “Jesus is the Reason for the Season.” It may sound cliché, but it is absolutely true. It’s so easy to get caught up in the fa-la-la fun that we—myself included—can miss the deeper meaning of Advent.

This year, I felt called to create some intentional space to slow down…to breathe…to pray. When I hosted my Bible study group for what became a simple Christ-centered Advent gathering, my hope was that everyone who walked through my door would be able to let go of the noise and experience the peace of the season.

To make that happen, I planned two meaningful traditions that helped us refocus on the Light of the World.

Instructions for a simple practice of surrender—write, place, trust.

1. The God Box:

A God Box is a place where you can leave your prayers, worries, and hopes for God—and allow Him to carry them. There are many variations, but I created a simple version: a gift-wrapped box with a bow and a slot in the top.

The symbolism is intentional: you place your prayers inside, and because the box cannot be opened, you can’t take them back.

You let go…and let God.

Our simple God Box—a quiet place to leave our prayers in God’s hands.

I set up the God Box in a quiet corner of the family room, along with slips of paper, pens, and a framed explanation of what the God Box was and how to use it. This allowed each person to understand the purpose of the practice and reflect on what they wanted to entrust to God—a gentle, guided way to participate that deepened the faith-filled tone of our gathering.

Simple, meaningful favors to carry the peace of the evening forward.

2. Candlelight Prayer Service:

Before we moved into the candlelight prayer service, each guest found a small favor at their place setting—a leather bookmark stamped with a Bible verse and a delicate angel or dove ornament. It was a simple way to welcome everyone and offer them a keepsake to carry the spirit of our Advent gathering back home.

Each guest received a candle and verse to help light our circle of prayer.”

After dinner, we came together in a circle for a simple candlelight prayer service—something I was hosting for the first time. I handed each person a candle and a sheet of paper with a unique Bible verse and the lyrics to the hymn we would sing later.

Pro tip: I suggest using a simple, easy-to-read font and printing the papers larger, in case any guests need their “readers”, and because the room will be dimly lit. This makes it easier for everyone to participate comfortably.

With the lights off except for the fireplace and the glow of the Christmas tree, I lit my candle and began reading as the narrator. Every Scripture passage pointed to Jesus as the Light of the World.

A room slowly illuminated by candlelight, Scripture, and quiet faith.

One by one, each person read their verse and then used their candle to light the next person’s. Slowly, the room filled with warm, quiet light—such a beautiful symbol of Christ’s presence among us.

When the circle was complete, I invited anyone who wished to share intentions. We prayed for one another, recited the Hail Mary, and closed by singing Silent Night together.

Creating space for stillness in the midst of the season’s noise.

Closing Reflection:

It was a simple, peaceful evening—one that gently drew us back to the heart of Advent. Through the God Box, candlelight, and shared prayer, our little group experienced a moment of calm and connection in the midst of the season’s rush.

A small gathering, yes—but such a meaningful way to honor the true Light of the world: Jesus Christ.

This kind of gathering is something you can easily make your own—simple, adaptable, and rooted in the heart of Advent. If you’d like a little help planning your own quiet pause this season, click here and receive a free digital download of the complete candlelight prayer service.
