Nothing says “home refresh” quite like a newly empty nest.
When my last kidlet — my daughter Mackenzie — moved out, it was beautifully bittersweet. I was excited for her next chapter, but I knew I would miss the rhythm of everyday life together.
And I do.
I miss the spontaneous kitchen chats.
The honest opinions (usually accompanied by a look).
The easy “Want to grab a bite?” evenings.
It’s different now.
But if I’m being honest? There are a few bennys too.
No more mystery dishes in the sink.
No more waiting up to hear the front door open at midnight.
And somewhere between missing her and embracing this new season, I realized something:
Her room wasn’t just empty — it was waiting for its next chapter.

Why Redesigning an Empty Nest Bedroom Matters
An empty nest bedroom makeover isn’t just about paint colors and new bedding. It’s about honoring a transition. When our kids move out, the house feels different — quieter, lighter, sometimes a little heavier too.
Redesigning the space can help bridge that shift. It allows you to preserve the memories while creating something that reflects your current season — whether that’s a guest bedroom, home office, hobby room, or simply a peaceful retreat.
For me, turning this into a coastal guest room felt like the perfect way to blend hospitality with history.
The Vision
We host guests often, so transforming her space into a dedicated guest room felt like the perfect solution. The goal? Cute and cozy — without breaking the bank.
I think we sometimes assume a makeover requires mega money. It doesn’t. With a little planning and patience, you can create something beautiful without overspending.
My strategy was simple: reuse what I could, invest where it mattered most (the bed), and layer in personality through texture instead of price tags.
Living in Long Beach, not far from the ocean, our home leans coastal. For this room, I decided to embrace a little “coastal boho.” Think soft beachy hues, natural textures, light woods, and just enough playfulness to keep it fun.
To keep myself focused (and not overwhelmed), I divided the room into three main areas:
- Bed
- Bookcase/Desk
- Sitting Area
The Bed
I didn’t want anything oversized that swallowed the room. A queen felt just right — roomy for guests while still leaving space to relax.
To ground the coastal vibe, I chose a light wood platform bed with a cane headboard. It instantly set the tone: airy, natural, relaxed.
After grabbing a mattress (and protector!) from Costco, it was time to layer in the beachy hues.
The Foundation Layers
- A textured 3-piece duvet set in a soft coastal tone
- A second comforter underneath for that cozy “double duvet” fullness
- Crisp white Mellani sheets (a repeat favorite)
- Pillow protectors (non-negotiable in our allergy-friendly home)
And then came my favorite part — the jewelry of the bed.
The Jewelry
- 20×20 decorative throw pillows with subtle coordinating detail
- A textured accent pillow that blended without feeling too matchy-matchy (similar to this)
- A hand-knit afghan made by Grandma Ida — the most meaningful layer of all
That heirloom throw might be my favorite element. Even in redesign, it feels important to honor where we’ve been.
Finishing Touches
Curtains
Out went the blackout panels. In came a soft cotton-linen blend with light embroidery and tassels. They brighten the room, allow natural light to filter in, and subtly echo the texture of the bedding without overpowering it.
The Photo Wall
Hands down, this is my favorite personal touch in the room.
Inspired by our family’s love of the ocean, I dug through old beach photos of each of us as littles. I had them enlarged to 16×20 black-and-white canvases.
They’re nostalgic. Personal. Meaningful.
And they make me smile every single time I walk by.
This room now feels like a retreat — for our guests, yes — but also for this new season of life.
In Part II, I’ll walk you through how I transformed the bookcase and desk area into a space that feels both functional and thoughtfully styled — proof that even practical corners can have personality.
And then in Part III, we’ll finish the room with a cozy sitting area that truly completes the retreat feel.
And I’d love to know —
Have you redesigned a space after your kids moved out? What did you turn it into?
Stay tuned…
