Gnome for the Holidays: A Whimsical Tablescape Perfect for Hallmark Movie Night (and Beyond!)

Serving up holiday cheer, one gnome at a time! The details really make the season sparkle.

You already know I take my Hallmark Christmas Movie Night pretty seriously (if you missed that post, you can read how this cozy holiday tradition began here). But what you might not know is that my theme-loving heart can’t resist giving each year’s setup a little makeover magic.

For this particular Christmas tablescape, my inspo all started with one little gnome. A friend gave me the cutest Christmas gnome as a hostess gift, and suddenly I was all in on the “Gnome for the Holidays” vibe.

Gnome one will want to leave this table! Cozy, whimsical, and sprinkled with holiday cheer.

Setting the Scene: Cozy, Whimsical & Oh-So-Fun

My goal with this tablescape was simple: keep it festive and fun—but still easy enough to pull together in the midst of holiday chaos. Here’s how I set the stage:

Linens:

I’m all about layering, especially when it comes to setting a holiday table:

Place setting perfection with a little gnome magic tucked in! Who says tables can’t be fun AND festive?

Dinnerware:

The holidays are the perfect excuse to bring out the “good stuff”:

  • White platesWedgewood Strawberry & Vine.
  • Sterling silverwareReed & Barton Francis I.
  • GlasswareWaterford Crystal Hanover Gold.

Flowers:

Trader Joe’s is my “go-to” for floral arrangements—great selection, great prices, and they never disappoint.

I used a cheerful mix of red roses, mums, white filler, eucalyptus, and evergreen mix, all tucked into shiny red vases for a fun, festive vibe.

Small ornaments tied with Gold Bow add a little "bling" to my whimsy table

Table Decor:

  • Christmas gnomes – A few from HomeGoods, a couple from Nordstrom Rack, and my original little trendsetter right in the middle.
  • Wooden candle holders – Add warmth, texture, and that cozy glow I love.
  • Clusters of ornaments tied with gold ribbon – For just the right amount of sparkle.
  • Mini wooden Christmas signs from Dollar Tree – A touch of kitschy charm.
  • Gnome string lights – My favorite finishing touch! They bring the whole table to life with a soft, twinkly glow.
Gnome and behold… these twinkle lights are bringing all the sparkle to our holiday table!

By layering textures, colors, and whimsical touches, the whole tablescape felt cozy, lighthearted, and full of personality.  Whether you’re hosting a cozy holiday dinner, a festive girls’ night, or my annual Hallmark Christmas Movie Night, this setup works all season long.

All lined up and ready to jingle! DIY gnome ornaments to make your guests say, ‘Oh Gnome You Di'nt!

Party Favors: DIY Gnome Ornaments

Since gnomes took center stage, my party favors were an easy choice—DIY yarn gnome ornaments!

They were a labor of love (and, let’s be honest, a few tangled messes), but totally worth it. Each ornament was handmade with yarn, half-wooden beads for noses, and little jingle bells on their hats.

Pro-Tip Time Saver:  If you’re making several gnomes, a Pom Pom Maker is a total game changer. (You can use cardboard, but these little gadgets saved me oodles of time!) Sharp scissors are another must—they make trimming those fluffy pom poms so much easier and cleaner.

Handmade holiday hugs in the form of gnome ornaments—because everyone deserves a little merry.

To give the gnome ornaments an extra dose of personality, I added punny tags printed on white cardstock—each one with sayings like:

  • Oh Gnome you Di’nt                     * Go Big or Go Gnome
  • Hangin’ with my Gnomies           * I’m Sexy and I Gnome it
  • There’s no place like Gnome       * Gnome for the Holidays
  • Gnome Sweet Gnome                  * I’ll be Gnome for Christmas

I used ribbon and baker’s twine to tie the tags to cellophane gift bags—then placed one at each guest’s seat to add another pop of charm to the table.

They turned out so cute I couldn’t resist snapping a few photos before my guests arrived. It’s the little details like these that make me smile every time I host.

(You can see the video tutorial that inspired these ornaments here.)

A Few More Fun Favor Ideas

Over the years, I’ve swapped out my gnomes for other cute take-home gifts, depending on the theme or my mood (aka how much crafting time I actually have that year 😅):

  • “For Your Mistletoes” – Nail polish & emery board
  • “Warm Hands, Warm Heart” – Cozy gloves
  • Hallmark Movie Socks – because, priorities.

Whatever you choose, adding that personal touch makes the night extra memorable.

A Tablescape That Lasts All Season

Here’s the best part—because I host my Hallmark Movie Night early in December, I leave my tablescape up all month. I just swap out the flowers, freshen up the linens, and give it a little mid-season jeuge.

This not only saves me time but keeps the house feeling festive for all the other entertaining I do throughout the holidays.

It’s form, function, and FUN all rolled into one.

Why It’s Worth the Effort

Let’s be honest: December can get chaotic. But when I sit down at the table with all my “gnomies” and hear all the chatter and giggles, I’m reminded why I do all of this.

It’s not just about the décor or the clever puns (though those never hurt 😉). It’s about creating moments that bring joy—to me and to the people I love most.

So whether your style is gnomes, glam, or classic red-and-green, my advice is simple:   Pick a theme that makes you smile and lean in. Because when your table is filled with laughter and love, that’s what makes the holiday magic truly shine.
