I received this book as a gift for Christmas!
You know it’s officially the holiday season when the Hallmark Channel starts running its “Countdown to Christmas” lineup of cheesy, predictable, and absolutely perfect Christmas movies. You know the ones—big city girl goes back to her hometown at Christmas, falls in love with her widowed high school sweetheart, rediscovers the true meaning of Christmas and decides to run the family farm. Do I know how it’s going to end? Absolutely. Am I going to watch it anyway? You bet!
That’s exactly how my Annual Hallmark Christmas Movie Night was born.
What started as a silly idea ten years ago has turned into one of my favorite holiday traditions—and apparently, my friends’ too. Every December, my living room fills with cozy pajamas, Hallmark Bingo cards, belly laughs, and enough holiday decor to rival the North Pole.

Invites: The Old-School Way Still Has My Heart
While a quick text works in a pinch, I still love sending real invitations. There’s just something about getting happy mail in your actual mailbox that feels extra special.
That said, I often do both—a text-vite from Poppynotes to save the date, followed by a pretty printed invite about six weeks before the party.
Pro tip: Send early. December fills up faster than Santa’s sleigh! 🙂
Why Early December Is Prime Hallmark Time:
I always host early in the month, before everyone’s schedule fills with work parties, school performances, and “We really should get together before Christmas!” dinners.
It’s the perfect way to kick off the season—and, if I’m being honest, it forces me to deck the halls early so I can actually enjoy my decorations all month long. Win-win!
Guest List & Set-Up
Over the years, I’ve learned that smaller is better—especially if you actually want everyone to fit comfortably in one room for dinner and the movie. I cap mine around a dozen guests.
Because it’s become such a hit, I now host three movie nights: one for my big group, another smaller one that includes a fun little gift exchange and one for my daughter and her friends. Each one has its own vibe, but all are full of the same joy, laughter, and festive energy that make the season feel magical.
Pajamas, Pinot, and Pure Comfort
Guests arrive in their coziest Christmas pajamas or loungewear. Right from the start, it sets the tone—this is a no-stress, no-heels, lots-of-laughter kind of night. It’s all about the FUN!
Bonus: Everyone’s already dressed for bed when the night wraps up. Practical and festive? Yes, please!
Dinner, Dessert, and Hallmark-Approved Snacks
I like having a beverage station set up for guests, especially helpful when many guests arrive at once!
As for the menu, some traditions just stick. One crew insists I make the same menu every year:
- Viva La Chicken Enchilada Casserole
- Mexican Caesar Salad
- Garlic Bread (because garlic bread goes with everything, right?)
I make the casserole the night before, so the evening stays easy and relaxed.

Guests bring wine, appetizers, or a sweet treat for the dessert table—but trust me, between the snacks, dinner, and popcorn, no one goes home hungry.
Pro tip: Keep some “to-go” boxes handy. Leftover sugar cookies make the best breakfast. 😉
Now, let’s talk tables!
Each Christmas, I dream up a fresh themed tablescape—because half the fun of hosting is setting the scene, right? A little imagination (and a sprinkle of Christmas magic) goes a long way. Some creativity and seasonal jeuge can completely transform your dining room.

Movie Snacks & Cozy Viewing
After dinner, we migrate to the living room—aka Hallmark Headquarters. Think soft blankets, fluffy pillows, twinkle lights on the Christmas tree, and a snack bar stocked with popcorn, candy, and wine (hot cocoa? Not for this crew! 😂). Basically, I’ve set up a slumber party for grown-ups!

A Little Friendly (and Hilarious) Competition
So now the real competition begins after dinner: Hallmark Christmas Movie Bingo.
Each guest grabs a clipboard, pen and a Bingo card (think “Hot Chocolate Consumed,” “Snowball Fight,” or “Big City Skyline in Opening Scene”) and we press play.
It’s amazing how competitive people can get when “Widowed Ex-Boyfriend” shows up on screen. The best part? The laughter that fills the room when someone shouts “BINGO!”—because let’s face it, we all saw that kiss under the mistletoe coming.

Movie Selection:
When it comes to picking the movie, you’ve got options: preview it, go with a tried-and-true favorite, or just wing it and live dangerously. I’ve done all three, and honestly—if you have time, give it a quick preview (or at least the first 15 minutes).
While I adore the predictably perfect charm of Hallmark movies, let’s be real—some are stronger than others. And some just play better for Bingo (you need those “mistletoe kiss” and “Christmas cookie montage” squares to land!). Nothing’s worse than your first-time crowd watching one that’s too slow to score a single “Bingo!”
Once you’ve queued up the movie, dim the lights, pour another glass, and let the holiday magic begin. Laughter, groans at the predictable plots, and the occasional shout of “Bingo!”—that’s when you know the night’s a hit.
Bonus Round: Future Trippin’
Want to up the laughs? Start the movie, play the first three minutes, hit pause, and have everyone write down their best guess at how it ends. (I just have them write it on the back of their bingo cards). You’d be amazed how creative people get!
FOR EXAMPLE: Noelle gives up her corporate job to follow her dreams and open up a bakery in her hometown. Selling her cookies at the Christmas pageant, she raises enough money to save the park and gets engaged to her high school sweetheart, Chris, the new town Mayor.
(I think I should pitch this idea to the Hallmark Execs! LOL) At the end of the movie, whoever gets closest to the real movie ending gets a prize.
Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner – Prizes Worth Winning:
Of course it’s not about the prizes, but Prizes = FUN, and I’m all about bringing the FUN! I try to buy things that I would like
Examples of some items I’ve used for Bingo are:
- A cozy blanket,
- Sugar Lip Treatment,
- Voluspa candle,
- Infuser Set (similar to this one)
- Starbucks reusable coffee cup set
- Countdown to Christmas book
For the Future Trip Game, I’ve kept it funny and light like an Elf Hat and Christmas Candy.
A Few Final Details
A couple thoughts on things I’ve learned throwing my Hallmark Christmas Movie Night over the years…
- Your friends don’t have to be Hallmark fans to be a fan of this party. It is an evening of laughter and FUN, no Hallmark loyalty required.
- The first few years I did the welcome game as an ice breaker. But as the girls have gotten to know each other, “catch up” chit chat has taken over.
- I’ve done a homemade hot chocolate bar which was a hit. But there’s usually so much food and beverage, it can get lost. So read the group and plan accordingly.
Why I’ll Never Skip This Night
This night fills my cup in the best possible way. The laughter, the inside jokes, the new PJs proudly shown off—it’s pure Christmas magic.
And when my friends start texting in September asking what day they should block off for Hallmark Movie Night, I know it’s become more than just my tradition. It’s ours.
So grab your coziest jammies, pour a mug of something warm, and start planning your own Hallmark Christmas Movie Night. Because life’s too short not to celebrate the predictable, heartwarming, snow-globe magic of it all…and the cheezier, the better…Hallmark-style!
That’s a Wrap!
If you host your own Hallmark Christmas Movie Night, I’d love to hear all about it! Tag me or drop me a note—I can’t wait to see what fun ideas you bring to life to make the evening your own. After all, the only thing better than watching a feel-good Hallmark movie is creating your own feel-good memories.
