Peace, Love & Disco Balls: 60’s/70’s Themed Party

Settin' the Stage with my Groovy Disco Ball

Always trying to make my Guests of Honor feel special, I shifted gears for yet another version of a 60th Birthday Bash.  This go-around I went with a groovy feel by incorporating tie-dye and peace signs and it screamed FUN.

While my party was a birthday celebration, I love that this Peace, Love & Disco Ball Theme could also work for a Woodstock Festival Theme or it could lean more into the 70’s…so many great possibilities.

Diggin' the Vibe!

To set the vibe, I reached for the disco balls I’d purchased for my New Year’s Celebration.

(See my New Year’s Post HERE!)

My large disco ball was the perfect anchor to work from.  My other Groovy 60’s Bash was more Retro Boho Flower Power using light colors like pink, yellow and orange.  This go-around I wanted bold vibrant colors with my peace signs and tie dye to be the statement.

I always begin my shopping within my own cabinets and cupboards scouring what I already own.

Then I spent time on Amazon seeing what was available that was reasonably priced so I could “marry” the two.

After some sorting and jeuging, this is what I came up with:

ROOM DECOR:

My Dining Room Area:
  1. On the walls:
  • I used the You’re Groovy Tie Dye Banner which was perfect for bringing in color  and also doubles as a backdrop that could be used for photo ops.
  • On the opposing wall, I made a large peace sign using foam board & colored tissue.
  • From my Tie Dye Happy Birthday Decor kit, I added a few brightly colored flowers.

2. On the Ceiling:

I added:

3. On the Mantel:

I kept things pretty simple in this area as this was an intimate dinner party.  But clearly you could have gonna bigger and bolder with the decorations.

I do lean a little more on the subtle side, but of course it depends on the size of party and what mood you are trying to set.

In the Kitchen Area:

My home is very open concept, so the kitchen is often the hub and where we tend to gather during parties.

Much of the space is taken up with bar set up or appetizers and often “family style” buffet for dinner.  That said, I still want to make sure the party is flowing throughout the house, so I always bring some of the theme there, too.

TABLE DECOR:

Tablescapes are one of my favorite areas to decorate.  When my guests sit down at the table, I aim for a lively table that exudes the theme.  This is what I did for this groovy gathering:

  1. White tablecloth – This bad boy is large, 90 x 156”- so for my dining room table it’s floor-length.
  2. Large piece of turquoise cotton fabric to layer.  A turquoise tablecloth would work too.
  3. Down the center of the table:
  • Tie Dye Table Runner – the perfect accent for the vibe I was going for.
  • Votive Candles – I have a large stash as they are a staple on all my tables.
  • Floral arrangements of yellow spray roses, white mums, St. John’s wort, Billy Ball stems (Craspedia), Gerber daisies, purple filler and eucalyptus were arranged in this fun mirrored vase and bubble vases.  I also added Disco Ball Cocktail Stirrers to each arrangement for some extra bling & to tie in the theme.

4.  Place Settings:

  • Silver Chargers to play off the Disco Ball (Also found at Dollar Tree)
  • White Dishes – these are my Wedgewood Strawberry & Vine
  • Silverware – I used my sterling Francis 1st by Reed & Barton
  • Glassware were my everyday glasses.  My disco ball glassware I used for my New Years’ table would have been a great choice, too.
  •  Orange Linen Napkins – just the pop of color I was looking for.  And BONUS:  I’ve also used these napkins for Halloween, Book Club & my other 60’s-Themed Party.
I really want to emphasize how I Repurpose my Purchases

The  Orange Linen Napkins are a great example to show just how many different occasions and styles I’ve used them for.  Using your creativity (and of course some jeuging) can showcase the same items in new ways saving you space in your cabinets and keeping money in your pocket!

Check out these examples of 3 different ways I used them:

FAVORS:

Who doesn’t dig a little party swag?!  I love to give my guests a little something when I can.  In light of my Groovy Disco Theme, I wanted to keep with something lighthearted and these glow-in-the-dark bracelets fit the bill.  Again, not expensive…just creative and FUN!

At each Place Setting:

SPECIAL GIFT FOR B’DAY GIRL:

Gotta get her groove on!  I gave the Guest of Honor a pair of Hippie Sunglasses.  (I also used these for my other “Groovy” 60’s Party.  Another great option for favors.)

AND…Found on Etsy, I made this lovely Photo Collage Poster using pictures of mutual friends that I then framed for her special gift.  I’m a firm believer in trying to personalize a gift when you can and this one was a winner!

This turned out to be a really great night and I loved the challenge of creating something completely different yet still very 60’s to celebrate a 60th Birthday

While this was a more intimate setting, having guests don their best groovy attire would be a FUN twist as well.  Again, so many ways to go with this theme.  Would love to hear your feedback on what you liked and loved! 🙂
