Caregiver Care Packages

Several years ago my dad was in a horrible car accident.  By God’s grace, he survived—but the weeks that followed were long and exhausting as I spent day afgter day in the ICU by his bedside.

During that time, the kindness of our friends, family and even strangers carried me through.  On my second day there, one of the nurses handed me a cup of water.  I thanked him, and he said something I’ll never forget:

“There are two patients in this room.  The one who is in the bed, and the one sitting next to it.”

It was profound.  That simple truth inspired me to create caregiver gift packages—thoughtful bundles meant for the ones who are holding vigil, advocating for loved ones, and running on empty.

Here are some items that helped me the most and would mean so much to anyone in a similar situation:

Healthy snacks (and a little chocolate, too!)

Water bottle

Insulated mug

Organization & Essentials

Spiral notebook or journal -–to jot down doctor notes and details

Sticky Notepad and pens

Phone chargeror extra cable

Chapstick – Hospital air can be really drying

Hand lotion – Travel sizes works great

Hand Sanitizer

Kleenex

Mints or gum

For the unsung heroes holding it all together, a basket full of comfort and thoughtful items can brighten their day and lighten their load.

Wellness Boosters

Emergen-C – It’s exhausting and anything to try and stay healthy is a plus!

Tylenol and/or Advil – Travel size is best

Lozenges – Again, hospital air can be drying.

Sweater/Sweatshirt – Hospitals tend to be cold to reduce the spread of bacteria.

Magazine – Something light.  I had the concentration of an ant so keep that in mind.

And of course, never underestimate the power of a meal train, errand runs, supportive texts, a card, or simply your presence.  Those small acts of love truly sustain caregivers during the hardest times.

A little touch of love, wrapped and ready — this simple basket shows that thoughtfulness is the best kind of gift.

Wrapping It All Up

Every care package you create is going to be as unique as the person receiving it.  Think of their favorite colors, scents, and small comforts—and let that guide you.  It doesn’t have to be overflowing with items; even one or two meaningful gifts pair with a heartfelt card can make someone feel seen and supported.

Once you’ve gathered your goodies, have fun arranging them!  Use tissue paper, shredded filler, or even artificial flowers for a touch of flair.  Place larger items toward the back, smaller ones up front and vary the heights for a pretty, polished look.

Pro tipA little painters’ tape works wonders for keeping items where you want them — perfect for fanning things out so each piece can shine.

There’s no “right” way to do it, just have FUN with it.  You by no means need to be an expert or artist to make a lovely gift basket.  The joy you put into creating your care package will always shine through.

Keep the Kindness Going…

I hope this list inspires you to bring comfort and a little light into someone’s day.
