Each Christmas, I love coming up with a new theme for my tablescape—and lately, I’ve been leaning into all things whimsical. After the heaviness of the past few years, I found myself craving something nostalgic…a little retro charm mixed with that cozy, old-fashioned Christmas magic.
And let’s be honest, what’s now called “vintage” are basically the things I grew up with—so I guess that officially makes me part of the décor theme! 😂
This year’s inspiration? A mix of Santa style and retro joy, with a few heartfelt touches from Christmases past.

Bringing Back the Magic: A Sentimental Starting Point
My Christmas cards featured photos of my kids when they were little—and I even dug out a few of my husband’s and my own childhood Christmas photos to weave into the table décor. The result was a warm, nostalgic blend of memories and merriment.
To carry that feeling into my table, I landed on a Santa-inspired theme (because yes, I still believe in Santa!).

Setting the Table: Classic Santa Meets Whimsy
This year, I wanted to add a playful twist to my traditional Christmas tablescape. To keep things festive but not fussy, I landed on a red, white, and black color scheme—classic, bold, and just a little whimsical.
LINENS:
- White tablecloth – A full-length holiday staple; perfect base for layering.
- Black tablecloth – A versatile piece for your Entertainment Arsenal.
- black-and-white checked table runner – Adds a playful touch.
- black cotton napkins – Let the red elements really pop.
DINNERWARE:
- Bright red plates – A Dollar Tree find (which, fun fact, have also doubled for Valentine’s Day and birthdays—versatility for the win!).
- Flatware – Everyday pieces
- Glasses – Waterford Hanover Gold Marquis for added sparkle.
Pro Tip: Dollar Tree, Target’s Dollar Spot, T.J. Maxx, and Michael’s are gold mines for inexpensive décor accents—especially if you bring your coupons and your imagination!
Centerpiece: Jeuge It Up!
Once I had my “Santa starter kit,” it was time to jeuge (yes, that’s a verb in my world 😄).
Here’s how I built the centerpiece:
- Stuffed Santa hats with tissue paper so they’d stand tall and perky (newspaper works too).
- Lined three hats down the center of the table atop the runner.
- Added fresh Costco flowers (a hidden gem for beautiful, affordable bouquets!) between them.
- Scattered wooden Christmas signs from Dollar Tree and shiny Santa-belt ornaments to tied with gold ribbon tied everything together.
- Lit the table with votive candles for that cozy, flickering glow I can’t live without.
The mix of textures and whimsy made the table feel fun, festive, and full of personality—without spending much at all.
A Touch of Nostalgia
To give it that true vintage feel, I color-copied old Christmas photos from our childhoods and framed them in small black frames I already had on hand. Guests loved the throwback and it became an instant conversation starter. (Pictured with gold frames I later switched out.)
When Hosting Family
When the family came over, I swapped out the Santa ornaments for Christmas crackers (a fun little pop of surprise!) and sprinkled a few extra ornaments down the table for sparkle.
Nothing I used was expensive—it’s all about using what you have creatively. I did pull out sterling silverware, which I treasure, but I’ll never “save them for good.” They are the good!
More Santa Touches: Keeping the Theme Flowing
You don’t have to go overboard to make your theme shine. A few thoughtful touches throughout the house help your space feel cohesive—without turning it into the North Pole.
The Santa Tree:
Near the entryway, I set up a small 4’ white pre-lit tree, added a pom pom garland, and topped it with—you guessed it—a Santa hat!
Bonus: From the dining room, guests could see it glowing, adding a little more sparkle to the meal.
The Santa Bookcase:
This one’s delightfully simple—I popped a Santa hat onto my bookcase display. That’s it. Minimal effort, maximum charm.
It’s these little winks of whimsy that build a theme and make your home feel full of holiday spirit.
Wrapping it Up:
Everything on this table came together from affordable finds, sentimental touches, and a good dose of creative fun.
So whether you’re going full-on Santa or just sprinkling a little retro charm around your home, remember: It’s not about perfection—it’s about the joy that comes from creating something warm, welcoming, and uniquely you.
