The season of merriment is upon us and it’s time to start thinking about holiday decor. Soon enough you’ll be bringing the tubs down from the attic to spread some Christmas cheer around your home. If you’re looking for something different, festive and inexpensive…this post is for you!
I wanted to do add to my Christmas Decor particularly in my dining room. I love a festive tablescape, and have really gotten into the idea of utilizing more of the space above the table to make it more visually appealing.
Scrolling through Pinterest, I saw a similar floating presents design used for a small business by Kelly Darula – The Bearded Dutchman and rolled it into my own look for my dining room area for Christmas.

Here are the steps I took to get the look:
PRESENTS:
Materials Needed:
- Empty cardboard boxes
- Thick White Wrapping Paper
- 2” Red Satin Double-Sided Ribbon
- Ice Pick (or tool to poke small hole)
- Fishing Line
- Nails
- Small Clear Commander
- Wooden spoon
- Scissors
- Scotch Tape (for wrapping presents)
- Start saving those Amazon boxes in various sizes. I used 10 boxes.
- Purchase thick White Wrapping Paper (It’s important that it’s thick enough you can’t see through the paper & this one worked GREAT) and Red 2” Satin Double-Sided Ribbon. I had thought I’d need the ribbon to be wired ribbon, but I didn’t end up needing the wire and saved some money this way as well.
- I wrapped each of the empty boxes as gifts.
- I then “mapped out” how I wanted to hang the boxes. I mixed large and small sizes as well as varied the direction the packages were facing.
5. To hang the presents, poke a small hole in the box (we used an ice pick to do this).
6.Tie fishing line tightly to nail & insert nail into hole.
7. Make sure nail catches within the box so as not to exit the box via the hole.
8.Decide where and at what height you would like the present to hang.
9. Once decided, attach a small clear commander hook to your ceiling. (Our hooks came off our ceiling easily, but please make sure they work for you.)
10. Cut the fishing line to desired length.
11. Make a loop at the end of the fishing line. I used a wooden spoon to make it easier to wrap the fishing line around as it was the perfect size loop and kept it taunt for ease. I made a double knot to make sure it was secure and slid it off the wooden spoon.
12. Hang loop on commander hook attached to the ceiling.
13. Repeat process with each present until desired display…and VOILA!
I hope the directions were clear. I took pictures as we went through the process. If you’re still needing some clarity, feel free to reach out.
TABLESCAPE:
I think this is one of my favorite tablescapes I’ve done for Christmas. I like that it was a mix of traditional with some whimsy mixed in. To get this look, this is what I used:
- White Linen Tablecloth (to floor)
- Red/White Striped Table Runner
- Pillar Candles with Holders
- Red Ceramic Plates (Dollar Tree)
- Votive Candles
- Fresh greenery (pine, eucalyptus, pinecones, holly berries)
- Floral Arrangements (made from Trader Joe’s flowers)
- I began by anchoring the table with a white linen tablecloth that drapes to the floor.
- Using the previous years’ reversible table runner (See Christmas Gnome Tablescape HERE), I reversed it to the red and white striped design and centered it on the table.
- Fresh greenery was added down the center of the table runner.
4. Two pretty beefy floral arrangements were centered on the table. I made the floral design out of flowers purchased from Trader Joe’s (but any market flowers would work): White Hydrangeas, Red Roses, Ornamental Cabbage, Red Holly Berries, Pine, Cedar and Ornamental St. John’s Wort.

5. I added the three pillar candles and then scattered votive candles along the table runner throughout the greenery.
6. Place settings of red ceramic plates for a pop of Christmas color were added and helped tie in my red ribbon on the packages. I used my everyday mismatched silverware to finish the place setting.
7. Bringing some more fun and whimsy, I made homemade tea towels (white with red lettering of holiday words) and used them for napkins. These were later given as favors for my each of my guests.
8. For a final touch, I added a sprig of pine and holly to each napkin.
ADDITIONAL DECOR:
Within the dining room chandelier, I added garland and tucked in some of the holly berries to coordinate with the tablescape below.
And, as luck would have it, I picked up two fresh wreaths at Costco that were a great price and coordinated nicely as the wreaths also used pinecones and holly throughout. I hung these in front of the two pictures in my dining room to finish the space.
ADDED “FUN” FACTOR:
To bring a little extra playfulness to the evening, I added a Christmas Scratch Off Ticket under each plate. Whoever was the WINNER received a prize like a gift card to Starbuck’s or something Christmasy. (Be sure and have some coins readily available to help your guests with their scratching.) It was something unexpected and a FUN way to kick off the night!
So, that’s a “wrap” for my Christmas Presents-themed dining room. Yep, I went there. 😉 Putting this together definitely put me in the Christmas Spirit. If you’re looking for ideas for some REAL presents, check out my FUN Gift Ideas here!
